Link Building Diversity Explained Plus Infographic

“The evergreen of SEO” or simply link building. It is not a rocket science , but there are many tricks involved in quality link building. Here I will list some link building ideas along with our infographic related to diversifying link building strategies.

Building links from various sources is essential factor. There are several good advantages for doing this.
One reason is that major search engines value this type of link building diversification. If all your backlinks come from a single type of sites for example blog comments, is more likely to look like spamming and trying to manipulate search engine results. If you have links from multiple types, it looks more natural and prove that website have some value.
Another reason is that search engines like Google are constantly amending the algorithms and quite often they blacklist some type of websites, for example article directories were popular way of link building before Panda update and on the other hand Penguin update completely changed the landscape of link evaluation, as well all latest algorithms are targeting for penalties websites that buy and sell links.


Anchor text is a major signal for relevance for search engines, although there are few other things that algorithms are checking:

  • Nearby links
  • Nearby text
  • Page placement
  • Overall page context
  • Overall site context
  • Other inbound and outbound links

Determining a Link’s Value

There are many metrics for evaluating a link, many of those data items are hard to determine. The best strategy is to concentrate on any kind of links with high and low value, however here are few factors that matters:

  • The Page Rank
  • Authority of the site
  • Linking page
  • Number of outbound links on the linking page
  • The relevance of the linking page
  • Do-follow or no-follow link

Types of Link Building

Well, there are many different approaches to link building and there are few different ways to get natural and unnatural links. Without going into details, I will just list those ways and leave brainstorming to you:

  • Using Content to Attract Linking
  • Content that build trust
  • Non-commercial content
  • Targeting trending topic

  • Spreading content through guest blogging

  • Interesting article Carl. For me, my first website was submitted to many directories for listing, but that's how it was done back in the early 2000's. Now that site is on more than 8,000 directories, and I certainly didn't do any of that. I have no idea what types of directories they're on across the board, but it's possible that some of those directories are dodgy, and there's nothing I can do about it. For every other site I've created I haven't submitted them anywhere, deciding to let the natural way take its course. I really don't have a link building strategy other than commenting on other blogs and letting people decide if they want to come back my way for a visit.

    Back in year 2000, probably until 2007 link directory submission was the evergreen of SEO. I was SEO supervisor in England during this time. Working on more than 400 projects, I can say that during this time submission to 50 high PR and 50 low PR directories was pretty much enough for a company website to get to top 10 for at least 5 keywords. Things, started shifting in the middle of 2008 and directories slowly lost its appeal, however, even nowadays link directories are doing very good job of getting one way backlinks with targeted anchor text. Many people say it doesn't work, well it does work, just need to be combined with many other things and links, that's why I called this infographic "diversity of link building". Every website or blog should have at least from of those link types to maintain stable SERP.

    Personal tip, don't leave link building process, blog comments are great way to get more and fresh links, but as I mentioned above, algorithms are changing often and we don't know whats next. Google used to favor link directories, after that article directories, after than social bookmarking, until last years blog comments. Build any kind of links and don't worry about algorithm changes, leave competitors to worry about that. ;)
